Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained running.
